REEEP (Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership)
is a Public-Private partnership and was launched by the United
Kingdom along with other partners at the Johannesburg World
Summit on Sustainable Development in August 2002. In June
2004, the REEEP was formally established as a legal entity
in Austria with the status of an International NGO. The partnership
actively structures policy initiatives for clean energy markets
and facilitates financing mechanisms for sustainable energy
projects. The partnership is funded by a number of governments
including: Austria, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands,
The United Kingdom, The United States and the European Commission.
Goals
By providing opportunities for concerted collaboration among
its partners, REEEP aims to accelerate the marketplace for
renewable energy and energy efficiency. Its goals are to:
Reduce greenhouse
gas emissions
Deliver
social improvements to developing countries and countries
in transition, by improving the access to reliable clean energy
services, and by making REES more affordable
Bring economic
benefits to nations that use energy in a more efficient way
and increase the share of indigenous renewable resources within
their energy mix.
REEEP regional secretariats
REEEP’s regional secretariats provide access to best
practice in policy and finance to promote renewable energy
and energy efficiency. At present, REEEP has eight regional
secretariats in Central Europe, East Asia, Latin America and
Caribbean, North America, Russia and the former Soviet Union,
Southern Africa, South Asia, South East Asia & Pacific.
REEEP South Asian Secretariat
The South Asian energy scenario is marked by low energy
consumption, higher energy intensity, and fast growing demand.
Different countries in the region have taken initiatives to
use renewable and energy efficient technologies. Against this
backdrop, REEEP activities have been initiated in South Asia.
The formal launch of a South Asian Secretariat is significant
in that it will give a further impetus to renewable energy
and energy efficiency in the region.
The REEEP South Asian Secretariat, therefore, endeavours
to provide a fillip to regional activities built around renewable
energy and energy efficiency development. This will be achieved
through
Creating
a forum for leading energy experts and decision-makers to
discuss and promote the role of renewable and energy-efficient
technologies.
Communicating
the relevant information and data to governments, financial
institutions, and industry leaders.
Developing
co-operation with relevant international and regional organizations
and financial institutions.
A Regional Advisory Committee will be formed to guide and
oversee the activities of the Secretariat in the region. The
Secretariat will work intensively with the partners to identify
and evolve practical projects and programmes in these focal
areas. These consultations and regional projects, it is hoped,
will lead to a positive outcome, beneficial to all the countries
of South Asia.
Apart from the links with REEEP International website and
network, this website would provide regular updates of the
South Asian Regional Secretariat. In addition, the website
would provide a platform to share information on best practices,
case studies, policies and regulations, and achievements in
energy efficiency and renewable energy in the countries of
the region; and also generate discussion on pertinent issues
in the South Asian context.
